Description: This course offers the opportunity to explore the many facets of learning through the medium of film and the surrounding practices, issues, and philosophies. At the core of the course is the relationship between film and learning by applying knowledge from both perspectives. The class will draw attention to the similarities and differences between film and learning as well as the differing goals and contexts that influence the use of learning media. We will emphasize both the practical importance of learning in the classroom and its meaning in everyday life. We will discuss how learning theory can enhance or limit how we experience film and video and how we use the medium to learn. We will look at films not only as informative or entertaining objects, but also as tools to explore complex ideas, challenge thinking, and establish deeper understandings of an issue.
Learning Goals: To understand the theoretical and philosophical issues surrounding the use of film as a learning tool and how they compare to those raised by other forms of learning; to examine how the development of narrative in film and film as a form of pedagogy is a powerful way to create and preserve meaning and create classroom experiences rich with multiple cultural understandings.

About the Instructor: Kenneth Chen is Associate Professor and Graduate Director in Media, Culture, and Communication at San Francisco State University. He holds a B.A. in film and communications from Sarah Lawrence College. Chen has taught film in film and media studies, both on and off-campus, at Keio University in Tokyo, William Paterson University, the University of California, Davis, and San Francisco State University. He has also co-led, with Richard Dyer, the International Summer Course on “Film and Educational Practice.”
