Tasher Desh By Rabindranath Tagore.pdf

The greatest achievement of Tagore’s is his play, Tasher Desh, for which he has won the Nobel Prize. It is the most powerful and popular expression of his vision of modern India. The play depicts a utopian society of his imagination, in which people live happily without money and are unaffected by the pursuit of material wealth. With his mindscape of India for 1930, Tagore spoke of the most momentous historical decision that would take place in the coming years. The Indians had unanimously decided to declare independence from the British ruling. Hence the title of the play, Tasher Desh — The Land of Cards. But since Tagore was writing about it in 1930, there was no need for him to introduce the idea of the declaration of independence. The noble Indians had decided on it long ago, even though they were powerless to do anything about it. The real year 1930 was to witness the actual declaration of independence by India’s young democracies. Tagore was marking this as a past event — one of the promises made in the secret of ‘Tasher Desh.’

The essential idea of the play shows princely India, a world of its own. Yet there is no need for My Prince to dismiss one of this country’s greatest assets. The prince thinks he is not one of its greatest assets. Even though he came to India, he is surprised to find that Indians do not appreciate his princely virtues. He is deceived by a powerful business class and its petty politicians. Tagore’s play, Tasher Desh is India’s ”Plato’s Republic.”’ The people have broken away from the princely family and who are happy living with their simple ways. But the prince is still proud of his charisma Although he misses his role of a prince as a king, spirituality, and even humanity more. He refuses to accept his place in history as a mere ruler even though there is no choice left but to do so. He is painfully trying to hide his sentimental feelings for his subjects and is even ready to turn a blind eye to their weaknesses. Mostly, he fails in his attempts.
