Instead, it’s Democrats “who feel the need to use the ‘pork’ as a political shield for pork-filled spending bills that cost the country billions of dollars,” writes Roy Gutman of the Wall Street Journal. “Addressing the budget-negotiations process is completely legitimate, but by using ‘pork’ as a blunt political tool, the Democrats are serving up the kind of acrimony that has made this Congress the least productive in memory.”
He also notes that this year is “fraught with potential pitfalls,” a.k.a. opportunities for Republicans. “The earmarking process makes Democrats uncomfortable, but so did members of the No Child Left Behind legislation of the last Congress,” which turned out to have “serious flaws.” In fact, the National
